AshantiGold sporting club finished the Ghana Premier League on the tenth position on the log with so many inconsistence performances after bowing out of the first round of the CAF confederations cup earlier this same season, however, the team managed to secure a place in the finals of the MTN FA cup against league winners Accra Hearts of Oak at the climax of the season.
Coming into the season, Ashantigolds have tagged underdogs after losing several players to bigger teams including their captain Shafui Mumuni and goal monger Hans Kwoffie in the second round of the season.
Unfortunately, when star man, Appiah Maccarthy picked a huge form and started dominating every opponent in midfield to conjure magic in big games to see the team through, luck eluded them as he also got injured just after six games into the season and that was the end of his season leaving Ashantigolds in the hands of pure talents without experience who were sometimes experimenting in games.
The Aboa Kese lads needed the season trophyless after losing the FA cup final match against Hearts of Oak on marathon penalties and finishing tenth on the league log was one of the poorest runs from the side in recent years.
In an exclusive interview with versatile player Frank Akoto, he summarized their general performance as mediocre and promise to do better next season.
‘’ I will say we didn’t do quite well, our season was full of up and downs and not the best of seasons for the team but it’s good to end in cup finals and that was something we are proud of, expect bigger things from myself and the team, we will improve on our game to challenge for titles next season’’ he said.
Frank Akoto, nicknamed ‘honorable Aziz’ was a key player and consistent player for the team this season upon his arrival from former premier league side Heart of lions two years ago.
However, the yellow and black side would have gotten the opportunity to represent Ghana in the CAF competition even as runners-up in the FA Cup but failed to apply go according to CAF’s new rules of application on time.
That means they will have a rest and come fully prepared for next season’s domestic football.
