The 100-day countdown to the 13th All-African Games competition was officially Launched at the University of Ghana campus on Wednesday 29th November 2023. The All-Africa Games or the Pan African Games, are a multiple sports event organized every four years by the African Union.
The 13th edition of the All African Games was expected to be hosted by Ghana in August 2023 but was postponed to March 2024 due to disputes between the African Union (AU), the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA) and the Association of African Sports Confederations (AASC) over marketing rights.
In attendance at the launch of the 100-day countdown was the Vice President of Ghana who together with other dignitaries toured the Borteyman and University of Ghana facilities ahead of the 13th All African Games.
Speaking at the launch of the event, the Vice President of Ghana Dr Mahamadu Bawumia said the government of Ghana is committed to the development of Sports and Infrastructure in the country.
“Indeed our government sees the development and promotion of sports especially the African Games as an investment for the future. The construction of modern sports facilities for the African Games is therefore a deliberate effort toward providing additional sports infrastructure for sports development. The construction of these magnificent sports facilities at the University of Ghana and Borteyman for the African Games demonstrates the government’s commitment to the development of much-needed sports infrastructure in Ghana”
Also, the Minister of Youth and Sports Honorable Mustafa Ussif called on Support from Ghanaians ahead of the Games
“ We are fully prepared to host the entire African continent here in March 2024. I just want to use this opportunity to appeal to everyone to rally behind these games so that we can host the entire African continent in Ghana this coming March”
A total of 23 competitive sporting disciplines and over 3,000 athletes from various countries across Africa are expected to arrive in March. Games that will be honored during the competition include, athletics, badminton, cycling, swimming, table tennis, triathlon wrestling, arm wrestling, beach volleyball, 3×3 basketball, boxing, chess, cricket, football, handball, hockey, judo, karate-do, rugby, taekwondo, volleyball, and weightlifting. Some games are expected to serve as qualifiers for the 2024 Olympic Games.
